International Plant-Based Nutrition Heathcare Conference Round-up – Part 2

Dr. McDougall’s Color Picture Book: “Food Poisoning” and How to Cure It

Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, GERD (reflux) and constipation aren’t usually what you think of when you hear the phrase ‘food poisoning’

But according to Dr John McDougall, that’s exactly what these conditions are: the results of chronic poisoning by foods that are inappropriate for human beings.

Dr McDougall is one of the giants on whose shoulders all those who practice wholefood, plant-based nutrition-as-therapy stand. His pioneering books such as The McDougall Plan, McDougall’s Medicine: A Challenging Second Opinion and The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart helped set my career direction back when I was at naturopathic college in my early 20s, and I’ve been reading his free monthly newsletter and watching his presentations online for years.

So it was an enormous privilege to meet him at the International Plant-Based Nutrition Heathcare Conference in San Diego last month, and watch him present in person.

Now aged 67, he’s still as dynamic and passionate as ever about promoting his simple, but profound message: the vast majority of people in Westernised societies end up suffering the diseases that used to be the domain of the nobility – obesity, heart disease, gout, diabetes – because they eat the food that only the rich and powerful used to be able to procure.

You can download the entire Color Picture Book: Food Poisoning and How To Cure It completely free of charge from Dr McDougall’s website. It has already been translated by volunteers into 15 languages besides English, for the purpose of spreading the message of self-empowerment through nutrition across the globe.

Although my own dietary pattern, and the diet I advise to most of my clients, differs a little from Dr McDougall’s recommendations (I position vegetables, fruits and legumes as the core of the diet), there’s no doubt he has achieved phenomenal success with his starch-centred diet in reversing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity and many other disabling and lifespan-shortening conditions.

Independent health writing is disappearing.

Everything left is sponsored, affiliated, or agenda-driven. The brands funding most health content aren't doing it out of goodwill - they're doing it because it works. Quietly shaping what gets written, what gets recommended, and what gets left out.

I've built Empower Total Health to be the exception. Every post is evidence-based, unsponsored, and written with one goal: to give you the clearest possible picture of what actually works for your health.

That independence has a cost. And it only survives if the people who value it choose to support it.

If you believe honest, uncompromised health writing is worth protecting, this is how you protect it:
