I made these peanut butter treats for our rescue dog, Comet, one of whose favourite jobs is ‘cleaning’ used-up peanut butter jars before they go in the recycling bin… with his tongue. But when I took them out of the oven to cool, my kids and husband started scarfing them down.
In order to protect Comet’s stash, I made a second – slightly humanised – version to feed the non-canine members of my family.
Ingredients (basic – for dogs):
2 cups oat flour (blitz rolled oats in the food processor until they form a coarse flour)
1 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup natural peanut butter (use either smooth or crunchy, depending on your preferences… but if you prefer smooth, I’m afraid we can no longer be friends)
1 1/4 cups hot water
Extras – for humans
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup pitted dates
Method:
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking sheets with silicon baking mats or baking paper.
Stir dry ingredients together.
For human treats, blend dates with water, then stir date mixture and peanut butter into dry mixture.
For dog treats, stir water and peanut butter and water into dry mixture.
Mix until it becomes a sticky dough.
Roll mixture out on a silicon mat or baking paper, until it is 4 mm thick. Cut into preferred shapes with cookie cutters.
Transfer to prepared trays and bake for 30 minutes if making human treats, and 40 minutes for dog treats. If making them for your canine companion, cool in the oven overnight to harden them – dogs love the extra crunch!
Treats can be stored in an airtight container for 1 week at room temperature, or in the fridge for up to three weeks.
